Are Your Campus Procedures Ready?
Few decisions affect a student more than removing them from class. Suspensions, DAEP placements, and expulsions each come with their own legal requirements, timelines, and paperwork. Campus administrators are expected to get every step right, often under pressure and on short notice.
A removal that skips a required notice, conference, or review can be challenged, even when the decision itself was sound. Recent legislative changes have added more for campus leaders to track. Consistent, well-documented procedures protect students, families, staff and the district.
TxSP has protocols for every type of exclusionary discipline. Each one includes step-by-step instructions and every document you need to carry it out, from parent notices and conference records to placement orders and review forms. Everything is editable and ready for your campus, so you can act with confidence and focus on supporting students.
What Changed in HB 6 That Affects Removals
House Bill 6, passed by the Texas Legislature in 2025, changed several of these rules for campus leaders.
-
In-school suspension no longer has a time limit, but each placement must be reviewed at least every 10 school days.
-
Out-of-school suspension is still capped at three school days.
-
Students in grades below 3 can now receive an out-of-school suspension for certain serious conduct.
-
Vaping is now a discretionary DAEP offense. A first-time offender who isn’t placed in DAEP must serve at least 10 days of in-school suspension.
-
Districts can now offer virtual DAEP and virtual expulsion programs.
Each change brings new decisions, timelines, and documentation.
